In1839,Guangzhouhasshiftedfromacosmopolitantradingcenterwithadiverseartworldintoaplaceofviolence.Duringthefollowingdecade,onevoiceofdiscontentanddefiancerangoutaboveallothers:SiRenshan.Hisprovocative,uncompromising,andsometimesuglypaintingsberateConfuciusforhishypocrisy.Heturnshisbrushtraceintographiclinesthatmimictheprintedpage,andhedepictswomenasalternativeexemplarsofamoralintelligentsia.Itisbelievedthathisoutspokennesspromptedhisfathertoplacehiminprisonforfilialimpiety,whereheprobablypaintedhislastwork.Duringthisturbulentperiodofincipientmodernity,closereadingsofSuRenshan’spaintingswithintherichcontextualhistoryofartinGuangdongProvincerevealhowthetraumaofwarpromptedare-evaluationofsocialandpoliticalvalues,andindeedthemoralresponsibilityofascholar-artist.
